REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS AND DISABILITY RIGHTS OF WOMEN WITH DISABILITIES-WWDs
The
question of reproductive rights is one great area that has been seen
to raise a lot of questions that seem to be so problematic. This is
mostly among the disabled women as well as the feminists with
disabilities. This has brought a lot of tensions. The reproductive
rights movements have received a lot of bad feelings from the
feminists with disabilities for the ignorance they have shown towards
the question of forced sterilization of the disabled women. This is
due to their failure to address the lack of giving the equal
reproductive rights to disabled women as the rest of the women
population.
The
group that is seen to be very active and very vocal about the torn
between rights of disability and reproductive are the feminists with
disabilities, they are pushing for the right to make choices and also
advocating against the push for selective abortion for defective
fetuses, this is due to a shared commitment between the disability
rights movements and the reproductive rights movements, the
commitment is about the aspect of women being in control over their
lives and also their bodies. This therefore is showing clearly that
the fights of these two movements are supposed to be similar.
The
fight for the equality between women and men should not be achieved
by the subversion of the potentials and equality of people with
disabilities. Reproductive
rights should not be abusive as seen in the type of counseling that
is given to pregnant women, the way disability is presented during
these sessions is very oppressive and causes very negative attitudes
towards disability. This in other words can be interpreted as meaning
that the world would be a better place without the people who have
disabilities.
